When the weather turns
Heat here breaks suddenly, and an afternoon can close down without much notice. The hotel occupies the brewhouse of the old Pearl Brewery beside the San Antonio River, and the building was raised for beer rather than for guests: tanks, pipes and steel are still where the work left them.
Where everyone goes
The ground floor takes the day. Its brick walls are thick, its ceilings high, and rooms that once held machinery now hold tables, shelves and a bar, so people settle in and stay. Guests walking the surrounding district come back to that same floor to dry off.
What stops working
The riverside walk below, the courtyard tables and the open-air parts of the district around the hotel depend on conditions and may not be in use. Anything planned along the water tends to move indoors, or to another hour.
What the building does
The answer was built long ago. Brewery walls hold their own temperature, the windows are deep, and the old hall is large enough to absorb a full house; doors open under cover, so the crossing from the district is short.
