Small timber lodge among snow-covered pines with lit windows

The surroundings are the point here, which is exactly what a low grey sky takes away.

When the weather turns

Out beyond Rovaniemi, in Meltaus, the hotel is small and the surroundings are the point, which is exactly what a low grey sky removes. The day loses its far edge. What remains is a short walk between buildings, a warm room, and the sound of the yard rather than the sight of it.

Where everyone goes

The spa takes over: sauna first, then the hot tub outside, which people use in weather they would not otherwise stand in. After that the lounge, where guests wait for word about the evening. With only a handful of rooms, the house fills and empties visibly through the afternoon.

What stops working

Husky and snowmobile safaris are arranged from here and depend on conditions, so a day's plan can move to another day. Watching for northern light, which nobody can promise in any weather, is the first thing to be let go of.

What the building does

The building answers by being compact: rooms, spa and dining sit close enough together that nothing needs a long crossing. Timber walls, a warm interior and a lit yard do the rest of the work in a place with no street to fall back on.
